A Review of Xpress: Two New Virtual Sports Games From The Pennsylvania Lottery

Pennsylvania’s eligible lottery players (those 18 years old and above) are seeing a rapid expansion of available games. Following the positively received Keno release are two new exciting Virtual Sports games called Xpress Football and Xpress Car Racing. These are fast paced simulated sports events based on random drawings occurring every five minutes.

The new games show PA Lottery official’s commitment to the experience and benefits offered to Pennsylvania’s players and non-players respectively. Lottery Executive Director Drew Svitko recently commented, “Following Keno’s very strong start, we expect that our Xpress Sports games will also be a big hit with our players. These games are part of our continuing mission to modernize our business and generate new funds to benefit older Pennsylvanians.”

These new Xpress Sports games can be found at over 1500 PA Lottery retailers around the state, where tickets can be purchased and game outcomes can be viewed live. Lottery retailers include bars, restaurants, clubs, and stores. If your local hangout doesn’t provide them, perhaps you can encourage the business to apply to become a Lottery retailer.

What are Virtual Sports?

Virtual Sports are a relatively new kind of wagering. In Pennsylvania’s version, Xpress Virtual Sports Games use ultra-realistic animation to depict the outcome of random computerized drawings that take place every five minutes. These animations are in the form of either a car race or a football drive. These games give players the feeling of betting on a football game any time of year or placing a bet on a car race though miles away from any track.

The PA Lottery’s Virtual football game is called Xpress Football and hinges on the results of a drive inside the red zone. Their Virtual race car game is called Xpress Car Racing and hinges on the results of a two-lap race featuring 12 cars.

Xpress Football

The Xpress Football “league” consists of eight fictional teams. In each five minute “game”, two of these teams are pitted against each other in a drive that begins inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. The drive will result in either a touchdown run, a touchdown pass, a field goal, or a turnover and will require a number of plays to complete between one and seven. Players win prizes based on their ability to correctly predict the outcome of the drive as well as the number of plays it took to achieve that outcome.

What are the prizes?

Players can wager from $1 to $20 each game and can play up to 20 consecutive games per ticket. For a $1 bet, players can win up to $250. Which prize can be won for which specific outcome can be seen on the following chart. The chart is based on a $1 bet, so multiply accordingly for higher bets.

How is Xpress Football played?

To play Xpress Football, players must first visit a PA Lottery retailer and pick up a playslip (featured below).

The playslip has three sections that need to be filled out including:

  • the amount wagered for each outcome selected ($1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $10, and $20)
  • the number of consecutive drives (draws) wagered on (1 to 20)
  • the possible outcomes – each outcome the player selects increases the chances of being correct and increases the cost of the ticket

Xpress Car Racing

Xpress Car Racing takes place on the fictional Pennsylvania Lottery Speedway and features twelve fictional cars and drivers speeding twice around the track.

What are the prizes?

Players win prizes for correctly choosing which car will place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. The highest prize of $250 (per $1 bet) goes to players who can correctly select the top three finishers in exact order.

Like Xpress Football, players can play up to 20 consecutive races on each ticket. Prizes and pays are detailed in the following chart, based on $1 wagered. Players can wager up to $20 on each race, so multiply accordingly for higher bets.

How do I find out if I won?

Many players will find out the results of their bets by watching the Virtual Sports event live where they bought their ticket. For those in a rush or who missed it somehow, results for each game are posted on the PA Lottery website.

Prizes can be claimed at any PA Lottery retailer, not just the place you bought the ticket. Prizes over $2,500 can only be paid by the Lottery directly. For more details, see here.

Are Xpress Football and Xpress Car Racing available online?

No. Unfortunately, these new Virtual Sports games are not to be found online or through the PA iLottery. Players seeking these exciting new lottery variants must seek out Pennsylvania’s brick and mortar retailers.

Despite this, the PA online lottery does feature some very popular real money games. There are dozens to choose from and here’s a perk: New players receive a free $5 bonus for signing up.
