There was only one PA sportsbook open during November, but the numbers were nonetheless impressive. Penn National’s Hollywood Casino sportsbook generated $1,414,586.55 in wagers in just half a month after their historic launch in mid-November.
With two new sportsbooks going live earlier this month and more imminent, it is looking like Pennsylvania’s burgeoning sports betting industry could make some serious waves during 2019.
Behind the Hollywood Casino Sportsbook numbers
In just over two weeks, the Hollywood Casino’s $1.4 million in handle exceeded most expectations. During the month, the Hollywood Casino generated an impressive $508,996 in gross revenue, which yielded $173k in Pennsylvania sales taxes for the state’s coffers. An additional $10k was taken in local share taxes.
Despite the impressive numbers for the month, one only needs to look to New Jersey to see the numbers that Pennsylvania can expect in the coming months. New Jersey took in over $330 million in sports wagers in November alone.
December revenue numbers will be particularly interesting as they will show a full month of Hollywood Casino sportsbook performance and also see the inclusion of the Rivers Casino and SugarHouse sportsbooks, which were the first casinos to go live in Pennsylvania’s two biggest cities, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. The Hollywood Casino’s sportsbook sits in relative isolation as central Pennsylvania’s sole casino.
Also not part of the Hollywood Casino Sportsbook numbers was mobile wagering, which has not yet been greenlighted by the state. PA mobile sportsbooks are expected to become available in early 2019, possibly around the time that the state’s online casinos begin to go live. Mobile and online sports betting in New Jersey represents over 70% of all wagering in the state, giving PA casinos a taste of what is to come next year.
