Thanksgiving Day Games
Bears @ Lions, 12:30pm on FOX
The Detroit Lions are the most storied mainstay on the Thanksgiving Day slate — this year marks their 80th appearance. They’re just under .500 across that history, and one game behind their opponent this year, the Chicago Bears, in their seventeen previous meetings on the holiday.
It’s been a rough year for Detroit. After a disappointing loss in Washington, they’re tied for the second-worst record in the NFC. But Bears fans are not much happier than those in Detroit this season. The early game pits these struggling rivals against each other yet again. A few weeks ago, the Bears beat the Lions by a touchdown. Will the Lions put up more points this time even without the return of Matt Stafford, or will Khalil Mack and the Chicago defense keep them out of the end zone? And will Mitch Trubisky leave Bears fans cheering him on or demanding his demotion?
Bills @ Cowboys, 4:30pm on CBS
The other Thanksgiving staple is the Dallas Cowboys, and this year they’re hosting an unfamiliar opponent, the Buffalo Bills. The Bills are in a commanding place in the wild card race in the AFC. They currently sit two games behind New England and stand ready to pounce on the top spot in the East should the Pats let things slip.
The Cowboys are coming off a hard-fought loss against the New England Patriots. Despite the loss, with the Eagles loss to the Seahawks, the Cowboys remain in first place in their division and rule their own destiny for the playoffs. The Eagles have three very winnable games before their rematch against Dallas in Week 16, so Dallas needs a good showing on Thanksgiving to keep their season humming along.
Saints @ Falcons, 8:20pm on NBC
To round out the day of touchdowns and tryptophan, a matchup between relative newcomers to the Thanksgiving game, the New Orleans Saints at the Atlanta Falcons. The Saints are blazing through the season and looking to go into their Week 14 matchup against the number one 49ers in a position to move up toward the top spot in the NFC. The Falcons are looking mainly to save face and put up a good fight at the end of a dispiriting season. That said, they held the Saints to nine points just a few weeks ago and served up one of only two losses on the Saints season so far. They may be able to repeat against their long-time rivals on this big day.
